march 2014 5 totallyoptical.com IN THE LAB OPINIONS Changes Are Coming BY CAROL GILHAWLEY I IMAGINE what it's like for a lab to be inundated with orders that need to flled and shipped back to customers as quickly as possible, even in the midst of a snowstorm. Being busy is a good complaint but really how effciently does your lab run? Are you making any changes to speed up your processes? Each year, new technologies come down the pike that can help improve your business. A case in point is cloud-based Lab Manage- ment Software that can be accessed from any mobile device. There are ever-faster, higher-capacity, and quieter free-form generators and polishers. And now there's a new lens technology that can combine complex curves on both surfaces of the lens. It's called Camber ™ and is a joint project between Younger Optics and Indizen Optical Tech- nologies (IOT). Three labs have already adopted Camber and a handful more are expected to do so soon. In "A New Era of Lens Technol- ogy," p. 14, Bill Heffner, IV of FEA Industries, Inc., writes about his lab's experience with Camber and how independent labs can now offer a super-premium product as a house brand. According to Heffner, Camber allows a lab to take its existing IOT free-form lens designs and control both sides of the lens to produce better optics. Also in this issue we look at all the new multi-axis edgers that will be on display at Vision Expo East. Labs have always been eager to fnd out what's new especially when it comes to surfacing (see p. 8). We also cover news from January's Transitions Academy, which made a return trip to Disneyworld with its "Experience It!" annual event. This year the Academy focused on Transitions ® Signature ™ VII lenses (see "Transi- tions Academy Ducks Back to Disney," p. 20). I hope to see most of you at VEE and if you have any news, please do share! Carol Gilhawley is Editor-in-Chief of Optical Lab Products and can be reached at cg@visioncareproducts.com.
