THE BATTLE OVER PROP 65 LOREM IPSUM The Vision Council is closely watching the ongo- ing litigation in California courts over proposed changes to the state's Proposition 65 law, which could have an impact on both optical labs located in California and any manufacturer that sells eye- care products in the state. The law regulates and informs consumers about the presence of chemi- cals known by the state to cause health problems such as cancer and birth defects, and Bisphenol A (BpA)–a substance used to make the polycarbonate found in optical lenses and frames–has been added to that list. The use of special warning labels on products sold in the state will be required if there is no set safe harbor level for the amount of BpA in products or if one is set and is surpassed in a product. Prop 65 also regulates workplaces where these chemicals are present. Follow The Vision Council for the latest on this issue. TOOLS OF THE TRADE The Optical Lab Division of the Vision Council has made its Optical Lab Division Toolkit, an assortment of resources to aid the lab professional, available to its members. Included in the Tookit are benefts such as four free hours of marketing and communications consulting services, customer service training, safety compliance check- lists, and the tracking of lab performance against the Shared Lab Data benchmarks, among other perks. Members can access the toolkit at thevisioncouncil.org/labs.
