LENS TESTING REQUIREMENTS COLTS rimless, acetate, and plastic. Each frame type must be tested with just one of your pre-qualifed materials from the Lens Material Qualifca- tion test. The frames you mount your lenses in must be marked ANSI Z87-2+. This test consists of a ¼-in. steel ball traveling at 150 fps (+/- 3 fps), both left and right eye are impacted at straight on in front of the pupil, at a 30° temporal angle, one 90° side impact at 10mm above the horizontal plane, and 90° opposite side impact at 10mm below the horizontal plane. LENS MOUNTING FAILURE What is considered a failure on Lens Mounting? • Posterior displacement of the lens completely through the frame • Fracture • Any detachment of a portion of the lens from its inner surface • Any full thickness penetration of a lens It is important to note that if removable side shields are offered, but not on the frame, they are considered non-compliant to this portion of the standard regardless of any other considerations. HIGH MASS IMPACT TEST Last is the High Mass Impact test. This test requires four pairs of glasses, once again with a pre-qual- ifed material in each frame type (metal, acetate, plastic, etc.) and the frames must be marked ANSI Z87-2+. This test consists of a 500g High Mass Missile with a radius of 0.125-in., dropped from a height of 50-in.; four impacts are done, one left eye, and one right eye per pair. What is considered a High Mass Failure? • Posterior displacement of the lens completely through the frame • Fracture • Any detachment of a portion of the lens from its inner surface • Any full thickness penetration of the lens Anyone interested in this testing should purchase the standard online at ansi.org. Kimberly Hutton is president of COLTS Laboratories. Daryl Neely is vice president/ COO of Colts Laboratories. A&R; Optical Machinery, Inc. 262-641-8780 arom @ ar.be www.ar.be WE HAVE THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS " " Warren Meyer Senior Vice President, VSP Optics Group A&R; AutoRange> " With the AutoRange system from A&R; Optical, we have been able to combat the most compelling challenge in today's optical labs, to improve the quality and consistency of our facilities and lower the cost of manufacturing. The small footprint, output of the machine, and accuracy of the results is everything we were looking for in an optical system. A&R; technology has allowed us to use our most valuable resource, our highly trained employees, on complex and out of range prescriptions. The folks at A&R; took the leap and invested the time and money to deliver a solution. It just doesn't get any better than that! "
