march 2015 27 opticallabproducts.com NEWS RUNDOWN Tom Flam VAN DER VEEN PURSUES NEW CHALLENGES After 22 years with the company, Hilaire van der Veen has left his full-time position with Shamir Optical, Industry Ltd. (SOI) to focus on consulting and personal projects. "I am at this time taking care of personal business," he told OLP. For the next two years, he will remain a part-time consultant with Shamir. "Hilaire has been an integral part of Shamir, with the opening of Shamir Insight, Inc. located in San Diego in 1997 and Shamir's expansion throughout Latin America," said Amos Netzer, CEO, SOI. "He has been instrumental with revolutionary initiatives, such as the launch of Shamir free-form in the U.S.," added Netzer. Van der Veen recently launched InoTime, Inc., in Philadelphia to offer premium Rx lenses in less than three hours. SUTHERLIN IS THE VISION COUNCIL'S LAB LIAISON Steve Sutherlin is now the Optical Lab Division liaison at The Vision Council. He took over the seat left vacant by Mike Daley when he became CEO of the organization. Sutherlin had been president of Sutherlin Optical Lab in Central Kansas City, MO, since 1991, and has overseen its growth to become one of the 20 largest optical laboratories in the U.S. In 2007, Sutherlin Optical became an Essilor partner lab. The lab has been owned by the Sutherlin family since 1939 and Steve has worked there since 1974. From 2005 to 2006, Steve was president of the Optical Laboratories Association and a member of the Association's board from 1998 to 2007. He was also president of the Midwest Optical Laborato- ries Association for two years. Steve was inducted into the Optical Laboratories Association Hall of Fame in 2008. OPTOTECH HIRES GRUMBLING AND SCHMIDT Jeff Grumbling has been appointed OptoTech's chief operating offcer, North American ophthalmic division. He is responsible for building the business in the U.S. as well as handling all ophthalmic sales, service, support, and training in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. Grumbling began his career 25 years ago with Pearle Vision before moving to Walmart where he was director of operations for the lab division. He also served as senior director of operations for Carl Zeiss Vision, Inc. on the west coast. Matt Schmidt, former president of LOH Optical Machinery, has joined OptoTech's board of directors. LENSKI JOINS VISION-EASE Vision-Ease Lens has appointed Grady Lenski as vice president of sales, North America. He will lead sales in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico, with a focus on mid-size retail, wholesale, and OEM customers. Lenski worked at PPG Industries, Inc. for 32 years, most recently as managing director of adjacencies for Transitions Optical. METZ WILL RUN ZEISS VISION CARE In July, Dr. Matthias Metz, 44, will become president and CEO of Carl Zeiss AG's subsidiary, Carl Zeiss Vision International GmbH and will head the vision care group. Metz is moving from Fackelmann GmbH + Co. KG, Hersbruck, where he was chief sales and marketing offcer. The four-member executive board of Carl Zeiss AG, will be expanded to include Metz. Ulrich Krauss will continue to lead Carl Zeiss Vision Care's U.S. business as CEO. CAVANAGH MOVES TO VISION IMPACT INSTITUTE Maureen Cavanagh has become president of the Vision Impact Institute ™ , an Essilor-supported non-proft group that raises the awareness of the importance of healthy vision. Most recently, she was president of Nassau Vision Group. Cavanaugh joined Essilor in 2005 as the director of Defnity ® lenses and soon after became vice president of integrated retail. In May 2012, Cavanagh was elected as the U.S. representa- tive for Essilor employee shareholders on the Valoptec board of directors.
